At our Kona Salt Farm, everything begins with one thing that makes us unique: deep ocean water from Kona, Hawai‘i. Drawn from 2,200 feet below the surface at the Hawai‘i Ocean Science & Technology Park (HOST Park), this water is among the purest on Earth, naturally clean, mineral-rich, and protected from the surface where pollutants and variability can occur.

Because water quality and safety matter deeply to us, we have built in multiple layers of protection to ensure every grain of salt and every drop of deep ocean magnesium is as safe as it is pure and mineral-rich.

Why Deep Ocean Water Matters

HOST Park operates six large ocean water pipelines that bring seawater ashore: some carry surface seawater (SSW) from near the top, and others carry deep seawater (DSW) from thousands of feet below. Surface water can change with sun, waves, and biological activity but deep ocean water is cold, stable, and consistently clean.

At Kona Sea Salt, we tap only into the deep ocean pipelines, ensuring a supply of water that has circulated in the deep sea for centuries, naturally shielded from surface variability. This deep water carries a balanced spectrum of minerals like magnesium, calcium, potassium, and sodium, the very minerals that make our Hawaiian salts and magnesium so special. At 2,200 feet the cold temperature and darkness also inhibit bacterial activity.

Safeguards at Kona Sea Salt

Even with a pristine source, we go above and beyond to ensure safety and purity:

  • 1-Micron Filtration: Every drop of water is filtered through a 1-micron system, removing particles, algae, and most bacteria while letting beneficial minerals pass through unchanged.
  • Solar Evaporation: Using Hawai‘i’s sun and ocean breezes, we naturally evaporate the water to form sea salt crystals. Sunlight and high salinity prevent bacterial growth as well.
  • Independent Lab Testing: We test our water, salts, and magnesium through accredited laboratories, checking for minerals, microbiological safety, and heavy metals like lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium. Results consistently confirm excellent results.

The NELHA Water Quality Lab

Because we operate within HOST Park, we also benefit from the NELHA Water Quality Lab. This lab has been monitoring Kona seawater quality since the early 1980s. They sample at dozens of points and water intake points including each of the six pipelines, groundwater wells, and delivery systems.

Decades of data confirm no significant changes in the quality of deep ocean water, providing strong baseline confidence. Combined with our own safeguards such as filtration, solar evaporation, and independent testing; this ensures your Kona Sea Salt products are consistently clean, safe, and mineral-rich.
